A few questions about getting a pet rat Care to answer2007-11-24 21:57:14

Tomorrow I'll be head'in out to the big crazy world to look for a pet rat. Ive made all the preparations. The cage is set up and ready for use. Ive got rooms ready for them to hang around in. And I think im ready to care for them as Ive been studying from a book I got from my local library.

Answers:

Petco will provide you with a small box. They actually do not allow you to use your own carrier or box.

As for the dog, my rats never paid much attention to the dog. They were not fearful at all. They used to come to the cage bars if the dog came close to the cage.

The seed is not very healthy, rats tend to pick out the seeds they like(sunflower) and leave the rest. It is not a complete diet as far as nutrition. The best choice is lab blocks, can't pick and choose. They have to eat the whole thing thus getting all nutrients.

I always named mine people names. Some didn't, but most were. Some of the names... Lucy, Maggie, Ashley, Penny, Madaline, Terrance, Don, Marcus, and the list goes on and on, lol

On an added note, most books do not provide all information needed for proper care. Most do not touch on the dangers of pine and cedar bedding, dangers of tanks as cages, etc.

they will put the rats in a box with little holes in it. your rat probably wont like the dogs to much. dont ever leave them alone. we had a pet rat and a hamster. we put them together in a cage. the rat was nice to the hamster but the hamster would bite the rats tail. we use to let the rat run around in the bathroom so he could get exercise. they only live 2 years.
