AHH Help What just happened my male hamster has a red eye2007-11-24 21:57:27

his eye was black before i looked at it this morning like a little check up i do it every morning an hi eye was RED not like an albinos but like i was dark red like blood was underneath or somthing HELP

Answers:

It may be a broken blood vessle or an ulcer, in which case, you need to take him to they vet to get eye drops that you will put in his eye twice a day...

For a blood vessle, they eye usually turns a purpleish color, and you can usually see a squiggly line through it...

For an ulcer, the eye just gets discolored, sometimes more discolored than others, depending on the ulcer...

If it's just a small red circle in the center of his black eye, that is his puple, sometimes they can be seen when the light hits it just right, and now that you have seen it, you will probably be looking for it more and notice it...

You're hamster could be a recessive odd-eyed...which means one of his eyes has less pygment than the other, which is why you can only see it in one eye...

If you think it may be an ulcer or blood vessel, than you need to take him to a small animal vet (if you don't have one around, some regular vets will see them if it's something they can treat like they would a cat or dog...which with the ulcer they can...but it all depends on the vet and if they are willing)...

Occasionally a hamster may get a sticky eye where the eyelids are fused together and older hamsters may be prone to 'sticky eyes'. This is often because a hamster may have something it its eye such as a piece of dust or it could be because the hamster's cage is placed in a draught or could be a symptom of a cold or allergy. The closed eye should be wiped with a small piece of cotton wool soaked in luke warm water. This is usually sufficient to open the eye but if not the eyelids can gently be pulled apart.
