ARGH every1 is confusin me please answer only if u kno2007-11-24 21:58:12

ok I got a female hamster who had babies that are now two weeks old who keeps fighting,

I read up and it says dont seperate them until they are 3 weeks old. they are only 2, but every 1 on here keeps saying seperate them.

so do I or dont I?? they eat the hamster food but are only an inch long so cant reach the water bottle and still drinks their mums milk

Susan is right, they still need their mother. They won't be weened until they're at least 3 weeks old, it can be 4.

The shoebox idea is a good one though, they're old enought o not always need Mum right there, so as long as she can get to them, they'll be ok.

If you've ever seen puppies together, you'll know they bite each other a bit, play rough n tumble, play fight. Baby hamsters do the same.. it just looks a lot worse. Unless they start drawing blood, then they'll be perfectly ok.

I would start limiting their time together, so the babies can still nurse, but the mom does not have as much chance to get aggressive. It will also help the babies wean. And get a lower water bottle.

I'm sorry to say this.. but don't separate them. At 2 weeks old, they still need mom, their eyes are probably not quite open yet, and while they might seem to be fighting, some of the squeaking and tussling might be the pups asserting dominance and deciding on a pecking order. It's the poor pup who doesn't fight back that you have to worry about. That poor pup may end up being lunch for its brothers and sisters.
