ARGH will my hamster eat her babys, every 1 is saying yes2007-11-24 21:58:12

ok my hamster had 8 babies. they are now 10 days old. they are to big for the house. so she has made two nests, each nest got four babies. and she goes to each one to feed it,

My mum went to the pet shop and complained because they sold me a pregnant hamster and the PET SHOP owner. she will only end up with three babies because when they get to big she wont cope so she will eat them

is this true cuz considering they are 10 days old I thought they would be fine now???????

No your hamster wont eat her hamsters because they get to big for her to cope with quite the opposite in fact. A hamster will only kill her babies if she thinks she is in danger, she does this because she would rather kill them quickly than let them starve to death which would take days. She would also kill them if they where ill to stop it suffering or passing on any disease to the others, seeing as your baby hammies are 10 days old i think you are doing great and chances are they will survive, in a few days time they will open their eyes and be much more fun to watch. Give them chopped up pieces of cucumber and apple and also boiled egg, they love these and also it will help mum with the feeding and help wean her babies. You will need to separate them from mum and put them into same sex groups at around 4-5 weeks they should be eating properly then and by then mum will be glad of the rest.

I think they should be fine. Just make sure you don't bother her until they are 14 days old, which is when you can clean out the cage.
