What is better to get a male or female?

Answers:

There are pros and cons to both actually. The females have a higher chance of getting cancerous tumors due to their estrogen levels. As a result, they don't live quite as long as the males. Males have a bit more odor to them, but are more friendlier than the females. I'd go with a boy.

I think they both smell about the same... and they are both friendly although I actually prefer the males to females they are way more mellow!... :)

Both are equally good, it all depends on your tastes. Apparently, though, some male rats can become bitey if not neutered--I don't know how common this is, if it's true.

As for smell, males tend to have a stronger scent, but you can't really smell either one unless you put your face right up to them.
