I think that they make equally good pets, I myself had a male and he was a really snuggly little guy. Rats don't actually smell... it's their urine. Males have a stronger urine smell. If you pick up a rat and it smells it's because it's been living in it's own urine soaked enclosure. The moral of this answer, clean your rat cages thoroughly every 2-3 days. Unless you want to be holding your rat that is covered in it's own excretions!

It all depends on personal preference.Males tend to be bigger, females tend to be smaller. Males are usually more mellow while females are more active, meaning they're pretty entertaining, but if you're looking for a rat to sleep in your pockets or cuddle, a male is what you want. However, females become more laid-back with age.

Males can get kind of smelly due to overactive hormones, but neutering fixes that. Females are more prone to tumors, but spaying reduces that possibility greatly. Fixing rats generally prolongs their lifespans anyway.
