Both genders are equally friendly. Females are always on the go, so if you want a rat that settles down on your lap, like I said, males are the best. Females can be really funny and super cute though, plus they're much easier to train.
It all depends on what you're looking for.
Males and female rats are both eaqually affectionate, and ultimately it is all about personal preference. Males tend to have a musky odor, resulting from male hormones, though it's not unpleasant at all. Males are also larger than females and easier to hold, and tend to get lazy at around six months old, making them perfect lap pets. Males tend to scent mark- leaving a trail of urine marks along their people's arms or furnishings so this may deter you from purchasing boys, however most rat people realize that a little bit of pee won't hurt them.
Females have a sweeter odor similar to cut grass, or hay. They move faster, and maintain their playfulness throughout their lifetime. As far as cage odors- neither rat will produce a urine smell like other small rodents do if the cage is well maintained with weekly cleanings.
Ideally you should get two or three rats as rats are always happiest and more social when they live a colony.
