Advice for Dealing with Wettail2007-11-24 21:57:25

Does anyone have any tips on dealing with wettail in hamsters?

Answers:

Change your hamsters bedding often. Stop feeding the hamster seed mix for the time being and only feed the blocks. Get yourself a small syrenge and make sure to give your hammy lots of water orally (about 8-10 drops a few times a day). You can try the medicine called "dry tail" but I personally don't like it. You can also ask a vet for a medicine called nutralyte that might help. A bit of gatorade (but only a small ammount) might help as well. Carrots and oats are good too.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

In baby hamsters it needs to be treated aggressively or the death rate is quite high. You need to go to an experienced pocket pet vet. The hamster needs fluid therapy, antibiotic therapy, and a force feeding formula, as well as anti-diarrheal medications. It does not always have a good outcome. In adult hamsters, the incorrect antibiotics can cause life threatening diarrhea.
Treat with Oasis brand Wet Tail Plus avaliable at most pet stores and keep your cage really clean. Good luck
