Are YOU a hamster lover

Are YOU a hamster lover2007-11-24 21:58:11

So, i am getting a hamster next week, and i need some advice. I've read 2 books, and i know alot, but i always like asking people who have or have had a hamster. I am getting a syrian male, and am so exited. Well, my question is this, what did you use for your hamsters cage lining, or the stuff on the bottom of the cage? Also, what was your hamsters diet? Did you just feed him or her the pellets, or did you add vitamins? and did you ever give them treats, such as carrots or fruit? Thanks for all your imput!

Good for you! I love hamsters. Grew up with them. Our hamsters even had babies at one point (bought a pregnant female without even knowing it) and we had to find homes for the many babies but we kept a handfull of them... all of the same sex so they wouldn't reproduce anymore. It was awsome having them as pets. We fed them the pellets, but we also gave them carrots and lettuce and the type of vegetables that they liked as well as fruit. We also gave them some peanuts, which they loved. They love peanut butter too. They look so cute when they're trying to eat peanut butter and it just keeps getting stuck in their tongue. Our hamsters were allowed to roam around the house and when we tapped on the floor and called their name, they would actually come to us, which that surprised me at first. For the lining of the cage, we used hamster bedding, which is bought at the pet store. Sometimes we would just put layers of cut paper bags on the bottom and they would nibble it into pieces to make their warm comfortable bed. A word of advice, though, if you end up with more than one male hamster, keep them apart as adults, as they tend to fight until one kills another. As babies they do alright together, but as adults they can kill each other. One more tip... something hard for them to knibble at would be a good idea, like a piece of wood, or hard plastic, as that would keep their teeth from growing too long. I've seen and heard of hamsters with teeth that grow way too long for them to eat and then they have health problems. Good luck with your new hamster.

Congrats. Keep reading lol. You can get all the stuff you need at a local pet store. They'll tell you everything you need to know.

I have a hamster. I put the soft bedding in the cage. You can buy it at a pet store it's like $6.00 for a package but its nice. I feed him hamster and give him chew stick and whatver else I can buy him when I ma in the pet store. Yes i give him treats when I buy then at a pet store. I have never feed him any human food so I am unsure if you can or not.
