They are not a dangerous animal, but if you handle them they can give you a very nasty bite which could get infected.The only harm they cause is they like to eat flowers, and fruit.They are also very territorial,If you have one in your yard, he will keep others away.Please do not remove them and take them to the bush, they die if moved from their home.

Opossums are the only marsupials (they carry their young in a pouch) found in the U.S. Their best defense is "playing possum" or pretending to be dead. However, when cornered, they can bite or attack. (If you get too close, they have a scarey sounding hiss). They do carry diseases, which are especially dangerous to horses. They can be a nuisance in the city because they like to get in trash cans and make a big mess. They are considered a pest in New Zealand because they do a lot of damage to their trees. Overall, however I wouldn't consider opossums to be dangerous.

Possums are a mixed bag. Generally not a harmful creature, but can deliver a nasty bite. Sad thing about it is, they are so dumb, they can forget they are biting you, so they won't let go. However, they only attack if they are absolutely threatened. Every possum I've ever met though hasn't been "evil", and actually pretty tame.
