Are rats good average pets Or look for something else2007-11-24 21:58:03

I used to own rats when younger, they didnt last me a year. But I remember them being very smart, playful than, hamsters, gerbils ect. I've never had a full grown rat, when I decided to buy a baby, I saw the parents they were hideous big as a foot things. And they scared me. I want to get over the feeling cuz they are good cheap pets, but the size they get overwhelms me. I've had all sorts of rodents as pets and the rats stand out as being "loyal as a dog" as I remember them. Any words of encouragement?

I've had rats since '93, and I don't intend to reveal how many have shared my life since then!

If you get rats, you absolutely must get a same-sex pair, as they are social animals, and need the company of other rats.

As to size, yes males do get bigger ( in general ), I've known males that were over a kilo, but I've also had some that remained quite small; so you pays your money, and you takes your choice.

Girls are, on average, more active, though again, I've known some laid back females, and some hyper males.

Most important is that you can tell the difference between the two sexes, 'cos you can't trust the petshop *G*

There are certain types of rats that don't get that big. You could do some research and ask a local pet store to see what they have.

Not all rats are that large. Perhaps you should get a pair of females as they tend not to be as large as males.

I have 3 pet rats all in all ive had about 6 they make awesome pets mine ride in the car with me and stay in my hoodie hood its cute there addicting though i have an opossum too now theres a good pet for ya! but id deff get more rats youll have fun with them
