Lets say I'm going on a road trip or staying in a hotel. Can I bring my rat along?

Answers:

Yes, you can. I've done it with my gerbils.

There are two ways to go about it.

1. You can look up pet friendly hotels (try Yahoo! search to find a website that lists pet friendly hotels) and tell them you are bringing a caged pet rat.

2. (this is what I did) Get a nice big hotel room with a king size bed and a big tub. Sneak your pet in through the side door or disguise the cage by throwing a towel over it and pretending it's a suitcase. Then once you are settled, block off all the hiding spots in the room and let your pet run wild!

As for travel, all 4 of my gerbils and my hamster seem to be okay with riding in a car (don't know about a plane). Just keep the cage out of sunlight, don't let them overheat, and watch the water bottle, as it will leak out all the water on the bedding.

if traveling by car you might not want to take them unless it is absolutely necessary . all my rats used to get car sick. don't leave them alone for long periods of time.

They can easily be kept in a cage of about a cubic foot, (Just one and two if it isn't going to be more than a week) any smaller is too small and any bigger is difficult to haul around for too long.

If it's just one big long trip that you should have one of your friends, or parents friends preferably, who has experience with rodents to take care of it while you're away.

Also, it is actually not that difficult to hide your pet if you are going to lower-end hotel that does not require you to walk through a lobby to get into your room. Just take your pet into the car before any room service or maid service may arrive. (But don't leave it there alone!)

but they travel easy in a small cat cage with vary small amounts of food & water over the day
