Are their any experts on Russian Dwarf Hamsters and their babies2007-11-24 21:58:05

I got to Russian Dwarf Hamsters three days ago and one had babies 2 days ago..how can I tell if she is taking good care of them?? Any good websites??

Hi,

i would suggest you to remove the male hamster, if you find him disturbing the babies. Dont worry about the babies, just give them privacy, cover the cage with a cloth for xtra privacy. Give her plenty of water and food, and do not touch the babies til they about 4 weeks.

The reason why mothers eat their babies, is that, they feelthat the babies will not live long, so instead of prolonging their suffering, they eat them.

And why i suggest not to touch the babies, is that the mother can pick up new smells, and may think the baby will not be healthy.

try not to change the hamster's bedding only till the babies are older.

Take any adult males out of the cage. Replenish food and water as often as you can and provide extra bedding/ nest making materials. Do not handle the mother or the babies for at least 10-14 days. Hammies birth on average 7-20 babies so don't get upset if 1 or even a couple die.. it is not your fault. Mother hamsters by nature are equipped to efficiently care for their litters. If she is sick, or not tending to her young I would contact a local small animal specialist or vet that is proficient in dealing with such occurances. GOOD LUCK!!

well what can i say, the person above said it all! but be careful that you dont touch the babies at all because that leads to cannibalism. the mom could eat the babies because she is confused. leave them in a quiet place and be sure to give the mom nutriets! for example, whole wheat bread with few drops of milk. that gives you a chance of a healthy mom :)
