Answers:If you mean those plastic 'houses' then they are not necessary - your gerbils will be quite happy with some 'fluffy' (or shredded paper) bedding and will use it to make their own nest (only use bedding that states on the pack that it is save to use for your pets i.e made from natural fibres).
No it not nessisary, actually they can chew on it and ruin them. Its nice for them to get exersice but not a have to.
Those specific ones are not necessary, but they do need a shelter for them to hide/sleep in. There are tons of alternatives at the pet stores.
