Answers:Well, either one is good. Carefresh is easier to clean, while aspen has a better smell. Do not use cedar or pine because they cause respitory problems. Carefresh comes in many colors, as apposed to aspen which is just wood. If you use aspen or carefresh make sure you buy bed fluff to put in one area of the cage {try to make as far away from the regular pet bedding as possible}. Also carefresh is more comfortable, while aspen could cause scrathes on the underside of your pet. Either one is good for digging/burrowing.

ok. short answer: depends on budget.
Long Answer: If you are money concious, go with a KILN DRIED NORTHERN WHITE PINE. I know we sell it for 2.50 for a 1000 cubic inch bale. Next is Aspen, which is slightly more expensive, but drier. Thirdly is something like soft-sorbent (by Kaytee), and finally, and most expensive is Carefresh/Carefresh Ultra/Carefresh Colors. I would reccomend for you the pine or aspen. Because knowing most people's mentality, when your paying 15-20 dollars for a bag of bedding, you will skimp on changing, trying to get your moneys worth out of the bedding. Where as if its only 2-5 dollars, you will change more often, since "oh, its only 2-5 dollars" as opposed to 15+.
My personal favorite is to use the shreddings from your paper shredder -- just nothing with too much ink (ie regular typed stuff as opposed to photocpies of pictures) and make sure to cut off the staples before you shred... My gerbils loved it -- it's cheap easy and if you put anbout 3 inches in it they burrow and play and make little hiding places...

My hamster likes both. I use the carefresh near his bed and water and the aspen is everywhere else.
Aspen looks nicer than the carefresh does and they are both safe. Aspen is more fun to run,dig, and play in.
