I'd be wary of any pet store that will sell you a hammy before 2 weeks, but they are ready to leave home around 3 weeks. Not TRULY ready, mind you, but by then they've learned at least how to survive. I like to leave the hammies with mom until they've got a little bit of the hamster/human relationship going. Learning by example and whatnot. But hamsters aren't social like gerbils, so first signs of fighting, they get their own rooms! Erh... tanks. =)

At a reputable pet store they will start to sell the babies once they are fully weaned from the Mother and able to eat regular hamster food. About 2-4 weeks old is the ideal age.

I'm guessing a few weeks, mice become sexually active at around 7 weeks, hamsters shouldn't be much different.

They let you buy transgenic mice, ones that glow green/red/or yellow.

It really depends on the petstore. My local Petco sells hamsters that are 4-8 weeks old. Most are not older than 8 weeks because at this time they start to become territorial. I believe this is also what Petsmart does. However, Petco often has adoptions and can sell very young hamsters. If you get a hamster from a friend or breeder, you can also get them very young. Maybe call your local petstore and ask what the age of their hamsters are? I'm sure they would be happy to tell you.

The petsmart i work at, doesnt get thier hamsters till they are 6 -8 months old. The breeder doesnt let them go until then.

Pet shops usually sell hamsters from 3 weeks old, but that's too early. Ideal is 5-6 weeks.
