At what age can I sex baby rats2007-11-24 21:58:15

I have some foster rat babies. They're two weeks old and their eyes are opening. How soon can I tell if they're male or female? I'm aware that when they're older they're very obvious. But I need to know how many males and females I have and which sex are which colors so I can find appropriate homes. Thank you so much!

the key is that while both have a place to poop and pee from, females have a third indent. also, females have nipples, six on each side. little boys can be mistaken for girls because they have the ability to protect their family jewels, and girls have been mistaken for boys because when they are trying not to go poopy on you, they will have a small lump down there. but once you get the hang of what to look for, you can never mistake who is who.

some people will tell you to compare the distance between the genitals but that is a highly unreliable method. a friend of mine took her new adoptions to the vet who told her with confidence that all were male, and a few weeks later, one of her "fat" boys presented her with a rather large litter.

A vet would be a good person to ask. My kid rescued a kitten and we did not know the sex or the age. The vet was able to tell us that after an examination.

Usually around one month you can sex rats. See if you can compare two at a time, it might make it easier. You want to look at the distance between the anus and a small protrusion (in both males and females). The males will have a larger distance and females will be closer together.
