Baby hamster with eye problems

Baby hamster with eye problems2007-11-24 21:58:17

My hamster's babies are 20 days old. One of the babies, a little white one, has not opened its eyes. How do I treat it? Also how do I tell the sex on these little babies?

Answers:

OK, erm...eye thing, DON'T TOUCH IT. You could damage the eye. Just take her/him to the vets. And, they're called Albino, very rare! Congratulations! I have one too!

Right, sexing them. Pick one up, take it by the scruff of the neck (a bit of extra skin that is easy to take hold of, the mother picks them up like that so don't worry about hurting them) and place it on it's back in the palm of your hand.

The penis of the male is about 6-12mm from the vent. The vulva (or girls bits...he he!) of the female is closer to the vent and is mostly bare, except for a few hairs maybe. Their bodies can help you as well.

The male has a tapered, elongated rear, while the rear of the female is blunter.

the sex normally is fairly easy. male hamsters have big testacles. by 20 days old it should have opened its eyes, but not much you can do for it. is it doing fine otherwise? normally the moms will kill any w/ something wrong with it. you may just take it out and examine it. i wouldnt try to force its eyes open though either. if all else fails take it to the vet to check out.

they will answer both of your questions exactly!

the butts of males tend to jut out more. and seperate males from females before they are 4 weeks old!
