Baby hamsters PLEASE HELP2007-11-24 21:58:18

My hamster had babies for the second time, they are 4 days old, but there's 1 problem, there was 8, but now we can only count 7. I don't want to disturb the nest too much but I am concerned. I don't know what could have happened, he couldn't of fell out the cage cos they can't walk yet or if mum had eaten it, there would be remains, what do you think?? We don't have cats or any other animals. PLEASE HELP!

Answers:

i had the same problem the mother will eat her babies if she thinks something is arong with them she will eat them what i did like a week after they was born there was only 3 left out of 9 and i took them out and kept them in a warm place and i bottel fed them every hour and now there like 54 months old and verry good and fat but if you still have the male in the cage take him out he will kill them to hope this helps

rodents sometimes eat their own young; cannabalism. Maybe that's a possibility?
hes probably hiding. dont worry. he'll show up when they get bigger.
mums eaten it ,they dont leave any traces
If there is a male hamster in there, which I would assume it is 'cause the hamester couldn't have gotten pregnant by itself, the male could've eaten it.

It is very common for the father's to eat thier young.

well this has happened to me before, when they eat they're young there are no remains, and do you have thick bedding? it could have burrowed/ or been burried by its siblings
The babies probably are hiding in the mulch. i did have a gerbil that ate all her babies once.
the male maybe have eaten it otherwise if the male didn't it is hiding
