Babysitting dwarf hamsters SAD STORY2007-11-24 21:58:19

Okay, so my brother's girlfriend and her sister have two dwarf hamsters. They were trying to sell their house, so I took care of their hamsters for about two months. My brother told me about three weeks ago that I was going to give the hamsters back the next day. So I cleaned their cages. My brother took them back around 3. At 9 his girlfriend called and told him that her hamster was dead, but the other one wasn't. Does anyone know why? I'm sad, and I can't feel somewhat responsible. She was alive when I took her out to the car. I don't know. HELP!!

Answers:

Sometimes in transport, animals such as rodents of all kinds can pick up and eat small things we normally wouldn't see. Also, if you used regular sawdust chavings that were treated, these are fatal for hamsters and various other rodents. Excessive heat and cold can affect hamsters. Perhaps the little fellow tried to hop through some toys and literally broke his neck in a fall during the car ride. I wouldn't take this too much to heart. Hamsters usually do not last more than two years. As an owner, one has to expect a short life, AND that any small thing can cause it's end. Who knows maybe the little guy choked on his food. I'm sorry for your harrowing experience--we all feel bad when something like this happens. Take care.

the heat killed her
I can tell you, I had 2 little turtles and when I was pregnant, I was working and going to school and didn't have time to take care of them, so I gave them away. Shortly after, they both died of some illness. It wasn't the person caring for them, it may have just been the change. Maybe small animals don't handle change well, that's all I can come up with.
How old were the hamsters? From my experience, the pet store doesn't always sell them when their babies, just... when they sell you know? My brother's only lived about a year. Other than that, it could be anything.
It could have been stress from moving they have heart attacks really easy! poor little critter!
