My Hamsters teeth are getting too long and I dont know who to fix it2007-11-24 22:13:30

He does have things to chew on in his cage, but he won't. He has two wood toys, a salt wheel and his plastic igloo, but he refuses to touch them. He doesn't seem to have a problem yet, and I am planning to take him to the vet next week to get them filed, but after that... any suggestions on how I can get him to chew on SOMETHING?

Answers:

Try many things to encourage his behavior of chewing. You may wish to place chewable foods, such as carrots, uncooked potatoe (it won't cause wet tail) and other hard things, such as pressed hamster cubes (available in stores). You may wish to try toilet paper rolls. I'm had a pesky hamster that didn't want to eat anything hard until I put strawberry jam on a toilet paper roll. In two days, he turned it into bedding his dental issue was diminished. As long as they chew, they'll wear the teeth down.

I had a bunny like that, we had to go get his teeth clipped every month. even with the salt lick and wood chews. if he doesnt want to chew, he wont ,who knows it could be painful for him, so you might be stuck going back to get them filed every so often.

You can try feeding him the blocks of food. They are somewhat hard, and should help his teeth.

Take it to the vet. I see hamsters there all the time.

Well at the pet store there is a toy that tastes like real food. So you might make that work. So just until you take him to the vet. That might file his teeth down so they dont get to long and hurt the hamster.Good luck!

They may be too long right now for him to chew his toys in comfort. Have the vet show you how to cut them at home it will help to keep them short . Also ask the vet for items that can help him to wear them down since the other stuff isn't working.

first go to the vet but to stop that from happening you are suppost to have a wood block or something like to keep the teeth down but donw' try yourself take him/her to a vet first

try fruit tree branches..like apples or peaches...idk about hamsters but my guinea pig loves them

try vitakraft small animal nibble bars or vitakraft carrot slims. my hamster LOVES them. they are cheap and are healthy treats for you hamster. they love them as well.

Treats AND they keep teeth short. two birds with one stone.

(petsmart or petco have them for about less than $3 per pack)

You may need to take him to the vet and get his teeth clipped. They can get to long for him to fit chew toys in his mouth. It may even prevent him from eating properly so you should get it done soon.
