I managed to get a rat that someone attempted to feed to a snake to like me. The snake wouldn't eat him and the rat was very jumpy and tried to bite everyone afterwards.. I just hand fed him a bit and then let him crawl around on me and around me to get used to me and now he loves to play with me =). It takes patience but it works

The rats werent socialized to humans when they were growing up. This happens a lot with pet shop rodents.. but they usually arent all bad, you just have to be very discerning when choosing. Try picking up or petting the rats in the pet shop cage to see which are the calmest, and choose those ones.

your first mistake was getting one from a pet store. they have no socialization with humans. they are just stuck in a cage having people look at them. they only know other rats. when you first got them you should have tried to get them used to you and their surroundings. not leaving them alone...
