Put some ice on it, I think he strained it running of the wheel. Don't worry is cheaper to buy a new one than take to the vet.

The swolling should go down after a day or two. You can take him to the vet, but, if you don't have a hamster vet in your area, then you can try to keep your hamster off of his leg. This might be kinda hard, but, I know that you can figure something out. You can try to get some pet gauze stuff and rape a little piece onto your hamster's foot. He might pull or chew it off, but, if he does, then try to find it in his cage (I doubt he will eat it), but, find it and put a new piece on his food.

Is there a visible wound? Could it have gotten bitten or cut and the injury is infected? If so, call a vet. Hammy may need some antibiotics for infection.

Is it eating normally? Running? Acting totally normal? It may just be irritated and swollen. If it lasts for more than two days, I'd call a vet.

Is it limping? Favoring a leg? Stumbling? It could be a broken leg. Call a vet.

Sorry to say, it is more than likely a broken leg or another injury that needs veterinary attention. But, like I said, if the hamster is acting totally normal and running, eating, and drinking, give it a couple of days and see if it goes down on it's own.

Take him to an exotics vet. Depending on the severity of the break, the vet might wrap it up, perhaps with a splint, or have to do surgery, or simply give pain medication (meloxicam and carprofen are used) and tell you to keep him from excessive activity. You should then take everything out of his cage that he can climb on, and give him soft bedding to burrow in so he doesn't go crazy from boredom, until the leg heals.
