My Syrian Hamster wont stop biting me2007-11-24 22:13:07

Im not mean to him or anything and he keeps trying to bite, I give him treats and etc

Answers:

Here are a few things reasons why:

1). Frightend: Frightend hamsters will bite. They are scared (I mean, you are A LOT bigger then they are). Try to talk to your hamster softly and in a calm voice before picking up your hamster next time. This might helps. Also, letting him sniff your hands will work too!

2). Smell: Hamsters are very good at smelling. Your hamster might be smelling a hamster treat smell on your hand, or a food smell. Try not to handle any foods or hamster treats right before you are going to handle your hamster.

3). Sleepy: If you wake up your hamster to play with him, then he might be mad at you and bite him. Hamsters are nocturnal and need their sleep. If you wake your hamster up, then, he will bite you since he thinks that you are a bad person. Please, try to avoid waking your hamster up. Wait until he wakes up.

Don't pick him up when he doesn't want to be

(Some hamsters don't like being held at all, even when they're used to you)

Stick your hand in the cage for a while so he can get used to you before actually being touched

Don't give him too many treats; he'll get fat

Your hamster is just scared. He needs to get used to you pet him everyday and always wash your hands before you play with your hamster. Hand feed your hamster and soon he will learn that you are a friend! Good luck!

it could be the way someone is approaching him or the way he or she is being held..the petstore is very stressful and can sometimes bring out the worst in animals
