My hamsters keep scratching themselves Is this normal2007-11-24 22:13:27
I couldn't sleep, so I decided to watch how they are doing. I noticed that they cleaned themselves and scratched a lot, but mainly scratching. I know that hamsters are more active at night, so maybe this is normal activity. Some other things you might need to know are:
I use Carefresh bedding
There is one boy and one girl
They are both dwarf hamsters
I just got the girl a few days ago
They get along great
If there is anything else you need to know, just ask. Thanks.
Answers:It actually quite okay for them to scratch alot, but it it continues, bring it to the vet or change the bedding, or bathe them with warm luke water or wash the affected area with saline water
They are cleaning themselves, but if they excessively scratch too much they may have fleas. Check your vet on them and ask cos it may be contagious. Change their bedding often.
I think it's normal. Might be that they're just grooming them selves. But if you're really worried, take them to a vet.
If they are scratching near their ears they could have mites.
hamsters in general love a good, long scratch. My hamster is 16 months old and every day (at the same time!!) he will go to a certain area of his cage and spend hours grooming and scratching. he loves it. If your concerned though, have a close look to see if they have mites, but my guess is they dont, so relax.
well, are they like scratching, then licking their feet?then repeating?? if so thats natural its grooming.
are they scratching or fluffing up their fur while cleaning? They may have mites, if its scratching.
