My hamsters picky about her food HELP calling all hamster experts2007-11-24 22:13:28

She is very picky, and i just feel like shes not eating the food i give her. It might be that she is not used to it, cuz i changed the kind of food she normally eats. Do you think that she will soon eventually get used to it? (they are all commercial bagged hamster food) ussually she would finish almost all of the food i give her overnight but now the plate is still full! Is it that she doesnt like the food? Should i buy another kind of food? are hamsters dumb enought to starve to death if they dont like the food i give her? I also suspect that she is too young too eat the kind those kinds of seeds where she has to chew through the shell. She is a syrian teddy bear, and shes only about 1month old. plz help!

Answers:

Be firm, leave her to the food. She will eat it when she's hungry. When you are through with that bag, buy a different kind.

If you are really worried, you can deshell some of the sunflower seeds and feed them to her by hand. Maybe the new food is really filling for her. Try giving her less. You can also give her raisins, uncooked oats, and rice krispies, without sugar or anything.

usually all rabbits and guinea pigs and hamsters are picky . she is just pickin whats more delicious for her just like ud pick food from a buffet lol . she knows what is best for her dont worry . my rabbit is picky too and hes doin fine . i also had hamsters before and they were picky as well so thats just their way of havin whats more delicious

Awww lol one month old. I have a Guinea Pig and he just turned one year old! when I first got him he was 4 months old and he didnt really like the food we gave him. So we found out what he used to eat and we gave him some of the food he used to eat mixed with some of the food he was supposed to eat (healthy food). And he slowly got used to eating his healthy food. And now once in a while we give him his favorite food as a treat!

slowy change the food by putting some of the the old food and some of the new one. do that for about a week and a half then start putting more of the new food than the old foodfor about a week than just go the to the new food.

The problem is she's one month old, she should be with her mother until 6 weeks, but for now there's not a lot you can do, if she's eating something then thats great, eventually she may start eating more kinds, but some hamsters never do, if she stops eating completely then you need to consult a vet.
