My male pet rat is biting Why is this and how can I help him stop2007-11-24 22:13:35

I'm watching my friend's rat, Nana, for a few weeks while he is out of town... I have a lot of experience with him, and normally he is extremely friendly, and very sociable. One of the best rats I've been in contact with - but recently he's started violently biting me without provocation! Nana will go for any amount of time being his normal self, and then suddenly he will become angry and attack.

It's noteworthy that his cage has been kept next to my other male rat's cage... I've read that increases in testosterone could lead to males being more aggressive. Could this be a source of the problem?

My friend also thinks that, because he has such a good relationship with Nana, that he might actually be missing him, because he doesn't like being away from my friend for extended periods of time. He claims that other people have told him Nana shows symptoms of a rat form of depression; could he now be angered at his absence?

Any experience or advice will be deeply appreciated!

You know to be honest BOTH of those issues might be a problem. He pry loves his daddy and misses him. Rats for sure show signs of depression sometimes. Maybe his agitation is manifesting in the form of biting and attacking.

Also, if he isn't use to being around other rats I wouldn't put their cages next to each other. They might not get along. It does happen. Especially if he is use to being a loner with his daddy.

yes,separate cages then just watch.on the funny side of this he is a male,their more aggressive.

I think the other male might be making him bite you, You may want to put them in different rooms and wash your hands well before you go from one to another. Also are you bothering him while hes sleeping sometimes that will do it. I learned the hard way. LOL.
