My pet rat has a strange black/brown lump under his throat2007-11-24 22:13:38

My hairless male rat has a black/brown lump under his throat. It's a recent development. I only discovered it yesterday, and it was only a little brown...today the brownish/blackish area has spread and is much larger. It does not look like a tumor and his activity, eating, playing, and drinking has not changed. Please help...I'm so worried about him!!

i just went thru this with one of my girls. she had that gross brownish/black covering over hers as well. its a subasceous cyst. it more or less appeared over night. i took her to the vets, and they had to cute away the brownish make as it was dead skin. there was a big hole in the side of her face. they drained what my vet described as "a chessy substance" (ewww gross) which of course was infection. they gave her oral medications and told me to wash it out with a mixture of water and peroxide 2x a day. most importantly separate her from my other rats until it had a healed over. they also told me NOT to use carefresh and just put paper towel in her cage and clean her cage every single day (i had to do it twice a day). she did very well with the treatments and it did heal up fine. i will tell you that it will probably cost a pretty penny, but well worth your little friend's health.

(it cost me 200$ and yes i would spend it all over again)
