A vet exam and treatment is almost always the best and safest way to go. The only exception being a rodent vet who turns out not to be too rodent savvy. I've come across a few of them. It doesn't take much to overdose anyone/anything, especially small pets. That said, some rat owners/breeders use ivermectin horse dewormer paste, revolution spot-on, bird mite spray, etc. There's also another ivermectin lice/mite treatment for mice that is said to be very safe when used as directed...even on pinkies. In my (& fellow breeders) experience it has proven safe. However, I'm not certain about it's use on rats. So, you would need to contact the site owner and ask her about it. Edit: I should mention: I've used the ivermectin paste on my past ratties w/o any problems, but I have heard of cases of overdose.

Signs of Mites - link below. One sure way to tell is by the brown gooey coated fur in its ears + the smell !!
