My pet rat is cutting itself what should i do2007-11-24 22:13:39

I'm 13, i have a pet rat. ever since my rats brother died he has been really stressed and keeps cutting himself purposley . My parents just spilt up so my mum and 3 sisters have very little money so we can't afford the vets fees, even though the vet said to get him looked at, what should i do?

If you can afford it you could try some 'rescue remedy' you can buy it at health food stores for around 3 pounds/5 dollars. Add a couple of drops to his water. It's a natural remedy which can be used safely on humans or animals and helps with stress or trauma. Try and keep his cuts clean (try bathing them with a little boiled (then cooled!) salted water which will aid helaing and help to prevent infection. Also try and remove anything 'sharp' from his immediate area. You could also try introducing a small furry toy to give him a new 'friend'. If you can get him to the vets that would be great, maybe (if you can't afford it) you could try telephoning your local animal shelter, tell them the problem and they might be able to give you some advice too. Good luck and give your rat lots of love and attention, that will probably help too.

Take away the knife..its obviously suididal. Maybe take it to a psychiatrist and see if you can put it on medication. : )

Seriously though..what is it cutting itself on? Do you notice scabs or little bumps on the rats hide?Maybe it has mites and is scratching or chewing at them. Try a bath with TINY bit of pyrethrins ( Flea spray ) in it.
