Rats tend to lose hair when they are elderly, but this is also a sign of mites or a skin condition? How old is the rat, and does he/she have scabs? Either way, get him/her to the vet. If you really can't then give her/him euchinacea - its a herbal remedy given as drops and has proven succesful in trails.

I don't believe so. It can b from old age or it can be a skin condition. get a different brand of bedding, change it, and go to the vet and get some antibiotics for your rat. if you do that then it wont die.

Well, it could be caused be a few things. If she has Rex or Hairless breeding in her background sometimes they do that. If she has cage mates they could be munching on it. It would be kind of unevenly shortened. Has she been itching or rubbing it? That would be parasites. Could even be an allergy to something possibly in her food or bedding. Or maybe even it could just be her personality. It wouldn't hurt to take her to a good vet to get their expert opinion so it can be treated if it needs to be.

The signs of a rat about to die is, thin hair, red substance coming out of their nose, orange greasy skin, weight loss, no longer active. I've had 6 rats, I know the signs well.

Just hair loss could be just a skin disorder such as mites, dry skin etc...

If in doubt take it to the vet like everyone else said.
