My pet rat isnt taking to me What can I do to get her to like me

I've been reading up on rats, and I know the score. But no matter how comfortable an enviroment I provide my little pet Genevive, it still seems to hate me. I know that rats hate being picked up, but it seems like that is spreading, in her,to a total fear of my hands. And whenever I'm around she turns into a complete acrobat trying to escape me - jumping halfway across my bedroom in order to hide under my dresser.

She's still a new rat - I've only had her for a week and a half or so. But what kinds of tips can you give me to help her warm up to me?

Create an area, a table or something... Have her cage set up, open, some boxes and such for her to hide in, under, around... Then you get a book or something... Sit down at the table, and let her explore the area, become comfortable with the surroundings... if you are busy with your own thing, she will eventually come over to see what you are doing...

Also you can take all the food out, and then sit there with your hand open, food in your palm, and she will come and eat and get to know you.

Try yoghurt treats, fresh pear, or some weetbix mixed with water... (that one would be better in a bowl than in your hand.)

Also, i would suggest getting her a friend... A new house, new smells, new people, and being separated from all of her litter mates, can be VERY daunting... If you have a friend that you can play with and get to know the place with, someone who has common ground, it is all that little bit easier...
