My pig just died2007-11-24 22:13:41

I had one pig which was a female and addopted a male they had a baby and 2 weeks after we addopted the male he started to loose his hair and started to get these scabs I put meds on him it went away then my female got it and put meds on her it went away then my male got it again and he died and female got it 3 weeks later she died she died 1 hour ago do you know why she might have died?

Answers:

The reason both of your pigs died is because you didn't get them proper veterinary care. I hate to be so harsh, but lets just call a spade a spade, so you don't make this mistake again in the future.

It sounds like both pigs had mites, which are very painful. The open sores caused from scratching & mite infestation can develop secondary infections that can & will result in death if left untreated.

Some antiobiotics are toxic to guinea pigs & cannot be used. One of the antibiotics in the Triple Antibiotic ointments that you purchase in a drug store is toxic to them. So if this is the "meds" you put on their sores/scabs, they could have died from ingesting the ointment.

Cavies are very good at hiding illness, so if YOU can see that your pig is sick, its probably worse than you think.

I'm assuming you still have the baby from your piggies that died. If so, you will need to have that pig seen by a vet & treated with Ivermectin. Mites do not go away by themselves.
