My poor rat2007-11-24 22:13:41

Sugar [my rat] has a cataract in one of her eyes, and she can't see very well. Well anyway, about 10 minutes ago she was climbing down a ramp to get to the bottom to see me. She thought she was at the bottom of the ramp, turned sideways to get to the other ramp, fell off the ramp sideways and was hanging by one of her back feet.

Afterwards, she was limping she I gave her an old shirt to lay on, got her her favorite treats, fresh water & food etc. and blocked her from going to the bottom until her foot healed. Anything else I should do? She HAS done this before, and the vet is not an option at this point.

Answers:

Dapper, Kurzez and Sarah are quite right. Sugar may have just pulled a muscle, and it will take about 2-3 days to heal, but if her foot doesn't get any better, being that old, you may want to get her to a vet.

Your poor rat! Just keep doing what you have been, keep her comfy, make sure she is not under too much stress, etc. How long was she left hanging there by her paw? Did you let her free asap?

Move her to a cage without ramps if/when she gets better, and make sure the new cage has no other safety hazards.

Umm you should just keep doing what you are doing for her. Keep her warm and make sure she is drinking and eating ok. Watch her and she should be OK.

My rat broke her toes doing the smae thing and when we took her to the vet he told us to do al that stuff i said.

5 years old is pretty old for a rat! Mine only lived to be about 2, but she had cancer...
