My rats poop2007-11-24 22:12:59

Ok, this is kind of gross but I need to know. My medium male rat Timmy, well, lately has been making rather large poops. He eats and drinks normally. He is playful and very happy, but his poops have gotten huge!! Is this ok?

Your question is not gross at all. More pet keepers should become aware of their pets' bowel and renal habits. Both are very good monitors of the pet's health.

His demeanor would indicate that all is well. It is not abnormal for a rat to have huge stools once in a while.

How old is Timmy?

How long have you had him?

What have you fed him in the last few days?

Any new foods?

When did you notice the change to the larger poops?

Are the poops his normal consistancy, or are they harder, or softer then they use to be?

Does he poop every day?

What color is his urine?

I need to know the answers to ease your mind.

Take him to a vet that sees "pocket" pets. Anything unusual in rats could be a potential problem. Don't wait too long. A day is like a couple of weeks to them.
