My sister broke off part of my chinchilas tail Answer2007-11-24 22:13:02

Only like an inch and a half. It's not bleeding a lot but it is a little. It's 10:00 so I can't call the vet. What do I do?

Answers:

Chinchilla tails are made to break off so they can evade predators.

If it's not bleeding, and the animal isn't suffering, leave it alone.

Really, alone. Stress can kill the little guys, so leave him in a quiet room for the night.

Put the broken off part in paper towel then a baggie and in the freezer, bandage up your chin's tail and take it to the vet asap to see if it can be reattached. if it isn't bleeding a lot, the bandage should be enough to keep it safe (you'll need gauze, if not, clean sock and tape, making sure the wound can breathe but it covered)

House the animal alone. If no displacement has occurred, put a collar on the animal and do nothing else. Avoid handling by the tail for at least four weeks. If displacement has occurred contact your local veterinarian. Call your local vet in the am and ask their advice.
