My sisters hamster is not moving much Whats wrong2007-11-24 22:13:04

The hamster's name is Bam-Bam and he is a golden hamster (she adopted him from Petco, unknown type). Normally, Bam-Bam is running on his wheel 24/7, but he isn't running on it at all now. We just got back from a week long vacation, but we had someone come and feed him three times. MY hamster is completely fine. But Bam won't eat, drink, or move. We think he has a broken leg but we don't have a local vet to help us. What should we do?

It's in a rodent's nature to hide any signs of illness/weakness, as in the wild they are prey animals (i.e. animals that get eaten by bigger animals). Typically, by the time we, as owners, start to see signs on something wrong it means that the illness/problem has already progressed pretty far. I don't want to scare you, but not wanting to eat or drink is definitely not a good sign. Can you remove him from the cage and examine him? Does he respond to you? Are you in any way able to force feed him (with mashed up pellets and a needle-less syringe)? If anything, get out your yellow pages and call around to veterinarians to see if they can help you over the phone.

Call Pet co since you do not have a vet see if they can advise you. Hamsters are nocturnal but the fact it is not eating is a concern.If he isn't moving to walk is he at least sniffing.If he isn't sniffing it is very sad to say it could be dead. =(

It's enviroment might be too cold or too hot, make sure that it is in a room no colder then 50 f and no hotter then 65 f.

you'l have to get a vet wether you live near one or not unless you want a dead bam bam and i would also advice you to not get a animal if you dont have a vet!
