My two gerbils fight and dont get along2007-11-24 22:13:08

I've had two gerbils before. One was lighter colored, the other was darker colored, so let's call the lighter colored one Cream and the darker one Cocoa. Cocoa died exactly two weeks after we bought the gerbils, so Cream was alone for a few days. I felt so sorry for Cream; she looked so lonely and depressed! I knew that gerbils should be in pairs, so we decided to get another gerbil so Cream has a friend. Today we went to SuperPetz to purchase another gerbil (SuperPetz is where we got Cream and Cocoa). Now let's call the new gerbil Blondie. We had the split-cage technique ready. Cream was on a side and Blondie on the other. Cream was immediately thumping her back feet and staring. I knew that was a bad sign, but I thought that they couldn't get hurt because I had the split-cage thing. I checked one hour later to switch them. They were FIGHTING, and Cream somehow climbed to Blondie's side!!

Now there's a bigger wall. Will they EVER get along? (and Blondie's nose was bleeding)

Answers:

It's not your fault.

Here's what you can do:

1. Get them away from each other.

2. Check to see if they are females. Did the clerk tell you? Females have a tendency to fight more than males.

Another possible reason is that Cocoa and Cream could have been family members because gerbils live in family groups in the wild.

Fighting is very rare among gerbils but there is no need to worry fighting can be solved.
