My very friendly hamster has turned evil2007-11-24 22:13:09

My hamster has been very friendly since I first got him. He never bit or ran away from me. All of a sudden today he just started To bite my fingers. I cleaned my hands twice because I thought maybe there was food on them. He begs to come out of his cage but right when I put me hand in his cage to get him he comes after my fingers. Why is he acting like this? I might have to get rid of him if he keeps it up. I cant have an aggressive hamster.

It's just his way of telling you something maybe he does'nt like his new food or he wants to be taken out more, you just got to look at the little signs.

Maybe he is becoming sexually mature and might see you as an invasion to his territory? Maybe he was inadvertently hurt and the biting is because he is afraid to be hurt again or is still hurting?

Hamsters are rodents. How old is he? They don't teeth exactly, but they do need to chew to keep their teeth down. Make sure he's got something to gnaw on to do so. Does he have an exercise wheel? He could be restless and have an abundance of energy. See if the pet store has a resident hamster expert. Or Google;

How old is your hamster?

if he is younger, this could be (as someone suggested) he's becomming sexually mature. If he is older, it could be that he is aging and he's a cranky old hamster? Another option is that if there is another person in your house who might be tormenting him, he may be scared of human hands.

I would try re-taming him. Treat him like he's a brand new hamster. Be gentle, talk to him quietly, and offer him yummy treats when he comes out on your hand and doesn't bite.
