Need to find a home for gerbils2007-11-24 22:13:57

So, I got 2 gerbils this year while at college, but live at home over the summers. Unfortunately, my mother will not let the gerbils stay in the house, as we have cats and they would probably get hunted down and eaten. But, I don't know where to go from here. As far as I'm aware, our Humane Society only takes cats and dogs. Do any organizations accept small animals? I'm not allowed to keep them, so what should I do?

Show this to your mom for me. I run a small animal rescue and have 87 pets all together. We have 14 cats, 1 wolf hybrid, 2 dogs, 19 Syrian hamsters, 11 rats, 11 dwarf hamsters, 2 rabbits, 5 gerbils, 12 mice, an iguana, a tarantula, a king snake, 2 cockatiels, and 3 fish in a tank all in the house. The only ones I must watch are the wolf hybrid and one of the dogs, the other gets along with all animals no matter the size. Our hamsters have escaped over time and the cats left them alone. Early on several years ago, my wolf hybrid did kill the hamsters before we knew they we out, but we used different cages back then. In her mind I think she thought she was helping but has a strong jaw and killed them. She was so sad looking after they were discovered, like to say "sorry".

Since you mom does have final say in her home, try calling around to different rescues to see if any of them will take them, also post a notice at the vets for them. Our local Humane Society only takes cats and dogs too so I got my name put on their list of volunteers to take them if any were offered to them. I'm also listed with one of the animal rescues as well. If you lived in the southern WV area, I'd be willing to take them for you and either see they got a home of their own or keep them if I have room in my home permanently. I have so many cages for my personal use and the rest are for rescues only. This way I limit myself on how many I personally can keep. I'd keep all I rescue if I could. See my profile if you nearby.

Post a flier at a local church. I'm sure some kid will want them and talk their parents into letting them take them home. Or post on Craigslist in your city.
