New Guinea pig; took to vet today may be pregnant (Please read on)2007-11-24 22:13:11

Got her Sat, 3 months old at Petco, found something long & stringy coming out of her bum Sun, thought it was a tape worm, took to vet today and vet said it was a mucus plug that pigs get after breeding. She thinks she's pregnant but I didn't want to pay a small fortune for an ultrasound (too early anyway). Has anyone ever heard of this? I know I'll know for sure in a few weeks lol!

Answers:

You don't need an ultrasound. It will become apparent very quickly. Pregnant pigs look like stuffed socks- bulging out the sides! The gestation period is 9 weeks. Long for a rodent, because the babies are born fully furred with their eyes open. They will start nibbling solid foods almost at once, but still need to nurse off mom for 4 weeks. At 4-5 weeks you can find homes for the babies. I wouldn't advertise in the paper because you will get snake owners who want them. Give them to friends or perhaps to the local elementary school- great classroom pets. If all else fails, ask the pet store to trade you some supplies for them. Keep a daughter to keep Mom company. Baby pigs are a lot of fun. Enjoy them and good luck!

well i think if you got your new guinea pig at the pet store you should talk to them to see if anything happened before you bought him/her keep checking in on your vet to see

hope your guinea pig is all right

i truly do not recall my guinea pigs ever having that when they concieved... just wait a bit. see if she gets bigger and then take her to the vet again. ask about safe wirm medicaion if you think that she is pregnant. otherwise if she IS pregnant, try to handle her a bit less and make sure that she is in a clean, healthy environment. good luck!
dont worry it will be fine, just make sure she's warm enough and has some place to hide
*when my brother got his guinea pig (at Petco)she started to get really big, we thought she was eating too much or somthing...but we started to feel little things moving in her belly.we had to put soft stuff in her cage for when it happens then she had four guinea pig babieswhen they first come out they are really wet and fuzzy and they cant eat normal guinea food, we mooshed up some alfalfa with water to make it easier for them to eat.we could only keep 2, we tried to sell them to petco but they they wont give money to u for them they just take them which is dumb because then they sell them and make more money.鈾?
I have never heard of the mucous plug coming out around conception, but I don't know for sure. Usually, when the sow conceives, the plug stays in place & doesn't come out until the birthing process begins.
