New hamster doesnt seem to be eating

New hamster doesnt seem to be eating2007-11-24 22:13:11

I very recently bought a new hamster (I got him on 05/21). Since I've had him he doesn't seem to be eating and I'm assuming it's because of the change in environment. Also, I changed his food from what he was getting at the pet store because I'm using food leftover from when Hammy passed away. When I had Hammy he immediately adjusted to the new food so I thought the new hamster would as well. I've also tried giving him carrots but he didn't take them. Other than that he seems healthy, he's very curious and enjoys his wheel. Is it the change in food, change in environment, or a combination of both and other factors that are making my little guy not eat? What could I do to get him to eat because I obviously don't want him starving!

I wouldn't take the be patient route. I've had hamsters for 20 years. I've only had one who had to adjust to the it's the same basic surroundings. The cage does need to be large, however. not those tiny things. you wouldn't want to be stuck in a locker, and neither does a hamster. When mine weren't eating, it was because something was going on. One had an injured foot. The other was dying of old age. I don't care how old the stores say a hamster is. There's no way to tell unless you saw ti being born. It sounds silly, but take it to the vet if you're really concerned, or if it doesn't eat in the next few days. And if the food is disappearing and you think it's eating, make sure it's not stashing it like hamsters do. It could be going through the motions, but still not be eating. It could be really sick though. It's no joke.

be patient... it need to get used to the new environment. they usually hide thier food when they get it under the stuff in thier cage and eat it when they feel like it... dont worry
Are you sire that he isn't eating, they like to hide their food in case of you taking it out. I would find my daughter's hampster's food under his bed ALL THE TIME! There is also the possiblity that he is old enough to be used to the pet store's food. You should call the previous owner to find otu what they were feeding him. It may cost a little more, but it's worth it to keep him alive! :)
Observe them if they actually but their food in their side pockets in their mouth(Cheeks). Hamsters usually do that.
