Now my guinea pig loves lettuce but why he stopped eating apples2007-11-24 22:13:14

I gave my guinea pig some lettuce and he ate it quickly. I think he loved it. But then later I gave him a piece of apple and he only did few bites. Why he doesnt like it? Do I have to give him some specific kind of apples? And is lettuce good for guinea pigs?

lettuce apparently gives them diarohhea (is that how you spell it) but yea i think it does but i own 2 guinea pigs and i feed them lettuce and there fine so yea not sure bout the other thing though sorry

Lettuce is not an ideal food because it is high in water with little nutritional value, and can contribute to diarrhea. It could be that your guinea simply doesn't like the apples very much. You could try a different variety and see if he prefers it.

Piggies should not have too much lettuce and related vegetables as they have a diuretic effect (they make the piggies urinate more). Fruit is OK but the best food (apart from pellets) is other kinds of leafy vegetables. This makes sense if you think about it - they wouldn't eat much in the way of root vegetables in the wild, because they don't dig, and they wouldn't eat much in the way of fruit because they don't climb. They run around in the undergrowth and eat the kind of stuff that grows there.

You might want to try some orange slices instead. They're very high in Vitamin C and are important for preventing certain bone diseases.

No lettuce is not good for guinea pigs. It's very bad for them. Maybe he's just fed up with apples. Try him with carrots, they usually enjoy them.

To be more specific, ICEBERG lettuce has a higher risk of giving a guinea diarrhea. Romaine, parsley, raddiccho, spinach, any darker, leafy greens are ideal (they're also high in vitamin c). A cup of any of these greens, plus any veggies like peppers (any color), tomatoes, oranges, etc. are a staple of any guinea pig diet. I give my pigs lettuce in the morning and in the evening. I buy the bagged lettuce at the grocery store that has mixed lettuces, like "Italian", or "field greens" (my pigs love the field greens mix b/c it has shredded carrots in it).
