OK i want to breed golden hamsters and i think that my cage is to dangerouslook at details2007-11-24 22:13:58

well it is 2 critter trail z's and it has one long tube going up into a bedroom. what can i do to make it baby safe.

When you start to breed remember, a hamster goes into heat every four days and from the day she is bred she will deliver 16 days later. Once you get close to the end of those 16 days,(I'd say around day 12) you will want to move her into a birthing cage. This is a smaller simple cage with no tunnels or frills so that she gets used to her new place and can build a nest. Also add some of her old bedding to the new cage. You do NOT want to leave mommy and daddy in the cage together. When I bred hamsters I had separate cages for them anyway. Or if you do not want to go to the trouble or expense of of another cage, take all tubes an contraptions off and leave in the main part of the cage till the babies are up and moving around well to get back to mom if and when needed.

Why do you want to breed hamsters? What are you going to do with all the babies? There are lots of unwanted animals already in need of homes, you may struggle to rehome them and if you end up stuck with a lot of them you are going to need to invest in a lot of new cages for them all.

Unless you are prepared to purchase and maintain anywhere from four - twelve hamsters, in their OWN cages (Siberian hamsters homed together past the age of 2-3 months will KILL each other because they are territorial and LONERS) I STRONGLY advise against breeding your hamster.
