i've got 2 female russian dwarf hamster in a good sized cage and one of them gnaws on the metal bars constantly.. i mean like probably 8-10 hours a day.

it doesn't appear to be harming her. i've given them wood blocks and other things to gnaw on but they just ignore it and gnaw on the cage ALL night long every night. Are they unhappy with their cage? I have two females and they seem to happy to have each other.

What would cause a hamster to spend nearly their entire waking hours gnawing on metal bars of the cage??

hamster do this, i never have understood why, looks painfull to me. consider putting them in a non-barred bin style cage (i'll post a link to a great website below) that way they don't have bars to reak havoc on. i would also suggest UNFLAVORED plain small dog biscuits. my hamsters never touched the wood chews but went nuts over the doggie biscuits. They can't have any flavor cause what they used to flavor them for dogs is too much for your hamsters tiny system. i would also suggest some bitter apple spray, coat the bars in it (not the hamsters though) it tastes bad to the hamster but won't harm them.

take the wood blocks out of the cage and soak them in flavored juice to encourage them to chew on the. And no, it wont harm them, its just instinct to gnaw of things to keep their teeth down. Take them out of the cage and give them plenty of time to play every day.. you hammy might want out too ;) its a good sign that she likes being around you!

idk i mean mabey its idk ..i think thier tring to get out but idk i mean iv never heard of a hamster doing that
