Ok to give my hamster dried fruit2007-11-24 22:14:01

I bought those Welches dried fruit snack packs, but I don't really like them. They are basically different varieties of berries, citrus fruits, and pineapples. I don't like them, so is it ok to feed them to hammy? They are very sweet so I want to limit his intake if so.

Answers:

Hamsters can't have any citrus fruits, this will make them sick. A hamster also should be given dried fruit due to the high sugar content in them, just check the sugar amount. It is better to feed them fresh foods but never any fresh citrus fruits (oranges, grapefriuts, pineapples, tangelos, etc) even in a fresh state, they will get very sick. Sometimes you may not even notice until they are gone. Also never give them any almonds, they contain cyanide (deadly).

Here is a list of fresh fruits they can have:

FRUITS:

Apple (seedless)

Banana

Blackberries

Blueberries

Cantaloupe.

Cherries

Cranberries

Grapes (seedless)

Lychee

Mango Melon

Peaches (NO stone)

Plums (no pits)

Raspberries

Raspberry Leaves (helpful for diarrhea)

Strawberries

For a complete list of other foods (veggies, meats, protiens, etc.) they can have plus a list of dangerous foods not to feed them, email me at wolfinator25840@yahoo.com Subject: hamster foods (please specify breed of hamster). Please don't send me a request through petqna.com , my list if too long.

Check the ingredients. IF they are just dried fruit, then small amounts from time to time are fine. If they contain sugar, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, preservatives or sweeteners of any kind, do yourself and the hamster a big favor and just toss them.
maybe try just picking out some of the raisins or less sweet items and give it just a FEW as a treat. you don't want to give it too much sugar and then it haves a heart attack.
If it is just dried fruit it should be fine, but if not, it can get stuck in their pouches and cause problems. If I were you, I'd chuck them and then chop up a fresh bit of fruit or veg for him so you know exactly what you're giving him.
Those actually have too much added sugar. If you want to feed dried fruit, make sure there is no added sugar. They do like those!
I wouldn't recommend them. They most likely contain some kind of sugar. And sugar to a hamster is not good. It can get stuck in their cheeks. And fruit is naturally sticky as well, so either way I don't think it's a good idea.
