they both live about the same average, but the life span for a hamster is about 2-4 years, and the life span for gerbils is about 3-5 years.

gerbils are more playful, plus hamsters tend to bite. hamsters are nocturnal, gerbils just have on/off sleep cycles throughout day and night. i think both love to be held, but you have to be carful with hamsters, because some actually don't like to be held. hamsters are solitary animals. gerbils are more social. though gerbils like to be held, they are just hard to catch/pick up, becuase they are curious, and hyper. but eventually you learn how to pick them up easily.

A hamster is the most playfull but gerbils live a little bit longer. My dad had a nice gerbil and treated it nicely but it still bit him HARD on the thumb his thumb was bleeding very badly. I have a hamster and it bit me once but it didn't hurt. Hamster are sooooo much better than gerbils even though they are nocturnal.

Get a guinea pig instead! They are way more fun, less likely to bite, and better for kids to handle. They are sociable, too.
