One of my guinea pigs had a bump on his side near the abdomen What is it and should I be concerned2007-11-24 22:13:19

I have two male guinea pigs that were born of the same litter. They have occasional sprawls, but nothing ever serious. While my sister was holding one of them, she pointed out to me that there was a slight bump on his side. I'm really worried. I tried looking into it some online and I heard that it could be a tumor. Is this true? If by any chance it isn't a tumor, is this something my guinea pig could have gotten from fighting with his brother? Any help/info on this would be greatly appreciated as soon as possible. Thanks.

I can give you a little info about what it *could* be, but the bottom line is that your piggie will need to see a qualified vet. By qualified, I mean one that is familiar with guinea pigs. If the bump has no scab, it is probably not from tusseling with his brother. The bump could be a tumor or a cyst. Both are unfortunately quite common in guinea pigs.

guinea pigs are prone to this and it isnt caused by the odd scuffle so dont feel bad about not seperating them. i advice you go to a vet though if you want to save his life

first, look under the fur and check that there isnt a scab, if there is, nothing to worry about, clean it and it will clear up on its own. have your piggy sit strait, not lening to one side. if the bumps are on both sides, its just his organs or something, as tumors usually dont grow semetrically. good luck.

It could also be an abscess from a bite wound. A vet check is the only way to be sure.

I agree with Ellen about the vet check. My piggy did have an abscess when I first got her because she got bitten and it was infected. If it is abscess, it needs to be treated with surgery, but it's not as scary as it sounds, the piggy would usually be normal the next day. Good luck!
