One of my hamsters has taken to empting out his food bowl into his bedding the moment I feed him---w2007-11-24 22:13:20

because of this the food gets mixed in with the bedding and lost - it's really adding up to alot of wasted food...besides this I don't know if I should fill the bowl more often because when his food is all mixed in with the bedding I don't know if he can find it or how much he is even eating...before this started, I filled his bowl once a day which is about how long it took to get almost empty but (honestly) when his scrotum descended he started acting funny-he doesn't chew as much as he used to although still enough to keep his teeth trimmed and he has this problem with his food

what happens is I'll fill his bowl and put it in the cage and then he'll run right up to it the moment it's down and he'll jump in the bowl and throw all the food over the side onto his bedding then he'll get out of the bowl and scratch at the food/bedding mixing it up even more

besides this he never goes near his bowl---I have tried different foods and bowls but he still does this!

what should I do?

Hamsters and other rodents just like to bury their food. You don't have to worry about it. If he mixed it into his bedding he will find it later.

my mouse does that all the time;

they hide it in the bedding but they take it out and eat it later.

Hamsters are burrowing animals, so it comes natural for yhem to do it. Just feed him/her every other day with a normal serving your hamster isn't wasting food.
