One of my pet mice seems unwell her breath is laboured but no other obvious signs2007-11-24 22:13:21

Chi, my mouse is fairly young and she lives with her sister, Pepa. though Pepa is dominant, they get along well & I often see Pepa cleaning Chi. they live in a large cage lined with recycled paper kitty litter & straw which gets replaced every 3-4 days. they drink tap water from a drippy bottle & eat 'mouse mix' with occasional treats ( I like them to try other foods) usu fruit & veg, raw & cooked, sometimes biscuit.

they have a wheel & jungle gym. chew blocks. they had a house until recently, but I took it out because they never used it... they prefer my old socks which they fill with straw.

I bought them both from a local breeder to make sure they were strong & cared for. I haven't wormed them yet because I've had them less than 3 months. If Chi is sick it's early in the illness, but I suspect she's lost a little weight, is hunched over and underactive. she breaths very fast, and appears to shiver.

her companion, Pepa is well fed, trim & very alert and active. Please Help!

Get her to a vet asap. Rodents get a respitory disease that is very contageous to other rodents.

mice don't tend to show that they are ill until they are quite ill. the best thing that you can do for her is to take her to the vet.

Sounds like you are taking great care of your mice!!

The little mouse with the labored breathing could have a respiratory infection. Does she make any noise when she breaths or is it just labored? When did you first notice her breathing?

Also, it is not nessasary to deworm a mouse. So I wouldn't worry about that. :)
